Viewed from the outside the Carlsbad Caverns, which are located in New Mexico, are anything but impressive and consist of several gray rock formations and a little scrub brush covering a less than impressive cliff. However, step inside and this is one of the most wondrous landscapes anywhere on Earth and, with more than 100 limestone caves for you to explore, you can wander here for years without seeing the cave thing twice.

If you are feint hearted then the Bat Cave is not for you as it is home to of thousands of these flying mammals. The Bifrost Room will take your breath away and, named after the Bifrost bridge into Valhalla from a Scandinavian myth, the colors here truly echo those of the rainbow. The largest open chamber in the system is The Hall of Giants which covers an astonishing 360,000 square feet. Within these, and the many other rooms, you will find Mother Nature at her most creative.

A giant stalagmite – The Witch’s Finger – is a corkscrew formation that is more than five times the height of the average person and the Rock of Ages is even more impressive as it makes stationary rock appear to move and the numerous outcroppings of flowstone look like a demon’s lair glowing from within.

Within the Carlsbad Caverns you can opt for self guided or staff guided tours which vary in their degree of difficulty from simple hikes around large open spaces to tackling ten foot walls and crawling through narrow entrances into large chambers.

One tour takes you through a section of Lechuguilla Cave which, at more than 1,600 feet below ground, is America’s deepest cave. This cave covers a total of more than 112 miles as it winds through the Guadalupe Mountains.

For the less active, you can travel to the Big Room by taking an elevator which descends 900 feet and look up and be simply mesmerized by this 25 story high open space. You can then walk around this 250 by 1,800 foot room which is filled with incredible rock formations. Also take the time to visit the Temple of the Sun and see the its dozens of eerily lit pools.

If you want to see the bats though you will need to visit between April and September as the 300,000 Mexican free tailed bats who live here fly south for the winter. A short half mile walk from the natural entrance leads to a plateau from which you can descend the 750 feet into the Bat Cave.

Remember too to pop on your favorite pair of waterproof hiking boots and take a look at the area around the caves as there are many fascinating things to do and see. In spite of its name, hiking along Rattlesnake Springs you are much more likely to see dozens of harmless reptiles and birds than you are to encounter the dangerous snakes which give this place its name.

A final favorite with visitors is a ride along the 10 mile scenic drive through Walnut Canyon. This drive takes you along Guadalupe Ridge and the views are quite simply spectacular.

Of course the Carlsbad Caverns are merely one of the splendid hiking areas in America and rank with such other great pleasures as Yosemite guided hikes.

You may question why portable GPS units cost as much as they do. Learning about the technology behind them may help make the price tag a little easier to accept. More often than not, we are seeing cheap GPS units being automatically embedded in PDAs and cell phones as well as the newest car models. The succeeding paragraphs will attempt to provide a simple overview of how GPS systems work. If you were hoping for all of the technical details, you certainly should have no trouble finding that information elsewhere on the web.

Here We Go

Did you know that there are approximately 2500 satellites currently orbiting the globe? Rather a large percentage of them are global positioning satellites. I know that sounds impressive, but only about 36 of them are actually in operation. A large number consists of retired global positioning satellites. A low-power radio signal, which can be picked up by your portable GPS unit, is constantly transmitted by the global positioning satellites. By accurately measuring the distance from three of these satellites, the global positioning system can compute its exact position on earth.

GPS systems satellites are about seventeen feet across when their solar power panels are fully spread out. They run on solar power and as extra insurance have backup batteries installed. They are designed to be functional for a minimum of ten years and weigh approximately 2,000 pounds. There is a “senior” satellite that has been working since 1978. Rumor has it that this one often relates tales from the old days when satellites had it much tougher than they do today. Just kidding!

But Seriously

Earlier I wrote a little about GPS receivers. So what are they exactly? It’s basically any device that is able to receive signals from GPS satellites. There was in all probability a GPS receiver on that cruise ship you were on last summer, another in the taxicab you had to the airport last week and then there’s that Navigon 7100 GPS that your boss just purchased for his car. The current average price tag for a personal GPS system is about $300. Considering you didn’t have to pay to design and launch the satellite into space, $300 is a pretty reasonable price.

The US government is responsible for paying the costs required in fabricating and launching satellites into orbit.|Our government here in the US has decided to take on the costs needed in creating this network of GPS satellites. All you have to do is click on your GPS system in order to make use of the data that is freely broadcast by them. I hope this article has done its job and that you now feel you have a more thorough idea of how the whole GPS thing works.

It is important to plan your vacation before packing your bags and driving to the airport especially when your destination is a place like Paris. Paris offers an amazing range of activities and you don’t want to waste your time in the City of Lights. There is so much to see and experience in Paris you won’t want to waste a minute. Of course you would want a worthwhile stay in the very famous city. Plan where you will stay before you get on the plane. There are many options and cover all price ranges - whether you need a 5-star luxury or a just a clean and comfortable Parisian bed

For a cheaper accommodation, you may want to consider a budget Paris hostel. It has a lesser cost compared to a luxurious hotel suite but you can surely have a home away from home ambiance. The next thing to plan is what to visit after billeting in your Paris apartment.

There are lots of places to visit when you are in Paris; from the most historic to most contemporary. Your vacation in Paris will be memorable when you carefully considered and plan what part of the city you will visit. Historical structures and buildings are sprinkled inside the city that you should not miss. There are also a lot of museums that display historical art pieces up to the most modern creations. Dining will be a highlight of any trip to Paris. Shopping completes the list of activities that will make your stay in Paris meaningful.

No one will forget to visit the symbol of Paris which is the Eiffel Tower. This 320-meter tower is well recognized in the whole world as a symbol of the city of Lights and as well as the whole country of France. This tower is built during the 1889 World Fair. It is a very fulfilling experience to climb the top of the tower for you will be able to see the whole of Paris during the day or at night. That’s a fair few stairs and at least you will sleep well that night in your central Paris hotel.

In its simplest form jet lag occurs when you are traveling and the time recorded by your body’s internal clock is out of balance with the local time at your destination. For instance, if you depart from London at 9 pm and fly to Bangkok you will land approximately 13 hours later at 10 am London time the next morning. But, because you have flown across a number of time zones, the local time at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport is now 4 pm on the day following your departure from London.

After you have traveled to your hotel, checked in had taken a shower your internal bod clock will now be telling you that it is time to eat. Now, your body clock thinks that it is lunchtime and, although everybody else is eating dinner, your internal clock doesn’t mind what you call the meal, it only cares that you eat. At this stage everything is fine, however, three or four hours later when everybody begins heading for bed your problems will start because your body clock still thinks it is now only late afternoon.

A time difference of 6 hours, like that shown here, is substantial and even the best of us will be experiencing the effects of jet lag. Indeed, although an hour or two will hardly be noticeable, anything over about 4 hours can be expected to produce the symptoms of jet lag in most of us.

There are of course a number of things which you can do before your journey, during your flight and at your destination to help to reduce jet lag but one problem which researchers have found recently is that when your internal body clock experiences a substantial shift in time it usually overcompensates when adjusting itself and thus leaves you suffering a double dose of jet lag before it finally settles down. Against this background, how do you compensate for this?

Well, it is possible to take this into account to a certain extent and reduce your jet lag symptoms by beginning to adjust your internal body clock before travelling, although your personal circumstances could make this hard. An alternative course of action therefore is to simply break your journey if you are going to be traveling across more than four or five time zones.

For our illustrative trip to Bangkok this might for example mean breaking your journey half way and relaxing for a day before continuing on. Today’s air travel might have made the world smaller but I’m afraid that it will take the human body a bit longer to catch up with technology.

There are numerous people that have their mind set to get various cheap flights, yet they never actually make the effort. Mostly they depend on individuals to do it for them, the third party types of companies that are around just to put together cheap packages for those travelers who don’t wish to do it on their own. While many of these types of deals are good enough for most people they are rarely if ever the best.

The majority of airlines typically offer some of their discount tickets up to these types of companies, however in the end, the bigger deals that they carry are offered directly from them. With some basic research, consumers can very easily locate different cheap airline flights on their own, likely they will be less expensive than anything offered by any of the travel companies.

Locating The Best Deal

For consumers, doing research is a key element. As a matter of fact, the best cheap airline flight is likely the one that is closest to home. That is to say, it is very important for people looking to travel to be familiar with their respective local airports, and to know which of the airlines frequent those same airports. There are many large cities, such as Boston, that have bigger sized airports, however there are other airports within reasonable driving distance that can serve as alternative choices.

These type of secondary airports - New Hampshire, Rhode Island,
Manchester for example, quite frequently have cheaper flights due to the fact that they are less popular. They also serve as hubs for some of the airlines, and those airlines quite frequently fly out numerous amounts of flights, yet will not be able to book all of them.

Many airlines would prefer to sell a cheap airline flight as opposed to having no flight at all, so many consumers are likely be able to secure good deals if they spend their time researching which airports are nearby, and which airlines service those airports.

An additional type of information worth looking into is peak travel times. Throughout the country, numerous different airports experience varying volumes at different times. Seasons, Holidays as well as school vacations all play a significant factor into these fluctuations, so what would be a period that is crowded in the Northeast area might not necessarily be a crowded time in the area of the Southeast. Many airlines will offer a cheap airline flight for a specific span of dates.

If people looking to travel can make plans around those particular dates, and of for them it doesn’t matter when the trip happens, they will be able to spend a lot less money by catering to the needs of the airlines. During travel times in their peak periods people are going to seek out flights regardless, so many airlines can afford to raise their prices. However, when travel times are poor, airlines will make available a cheap airline flight on a consistent basis in the hopes of securing at a minimum at least some business.

It is becoming increasingly common to see that many of the new, smaller, hotels are describing themselves as a “Boutique Hotel”. Across the city of London, the capital city of England in the United Kingdom, there are now a small number of superb boutique hotels but what exactly is a “Boutique Hotel” and where did they first appear? This article discusses this question in detail.

More often than not a boutique hotel is owned, run and maintained by one family, a couple, and in some cases, small hotel chains specializing in this type of accommodation. However, there has been a recent trend for some of the larger hotel chains to build hotels to meet the specific demand for these hotels so this distinction may not hold true for much longer! One statement that is true for all boutique hotels is that they feature unique elements of decoration and style and, in many cases, this is based upon a specific theme. Such themes can range from a hotel decorated and furnished in the 17th Century style to one which is focused on chocolate for avid chocoholics. Not all boutique hotels are based upon one particular theme, sometimes there may be a number of distinctive themes or each room may be styled in a contrasting them altogether.

Where Was The First Boutique Hotel?

Boutique hotels first appeared in the late 1980s in New York USA. Although some hotels claim to have been boutique hotels as far back as 1981 in places such as London UK and San Francisco the first hotel to be described as such was the ‘Morgans’ hotel, New York, in 1984. These earlier claimants were, therefore, subsequently described as such and can not, realistically, claim to be the first.

‘Morgans’ hotel was owned by Steven Rubell and Ian Schrager who had commissioned the Parisian designer Andrée Putman to create a unique, highly stylized, hotel in New York. Putman created the hotel in what has become known as an “America meets Europe” fashion. Steven Rubell wished to make his hotel stand out from, what he considered to be, the mundane and plain hotels of the larger chains. He described other hotels as “department store” hotels and his own as a “boutique hotel” to show the distinctive difference - thus the phrase entered the English language for the first time.

Interesting Boutique Hotels in the United Kingdom

42 The Calls (hotel) in Leeds claims to be one of the first to appear in the UK. The Calls was a hotel built in the carcass of an old corn mill and used that as the overall theme. The hotel is well known for featuring superb, and extremely comfortable, hand crafted beds in each room and, interestingly, it also has some of the old corn mills original machinery.

The Blake’s Hotel in South Kensington, London, is often quoted as being one of the first boutique hotels in the world but, although this appeared before Morgans in New York, for the reasons outlined above this claim is often dismissed. Over the last few decades there have been a number of boutique hotels appearing across the United Kingdom in such diverse places as the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland but the largest number have opened in London.

If you are planning a trip to, or a vacation in, London and you are considering booking a boutique hotel you may wish to check out the listings of boutique hotels in London at http://www.londonhotelhelper.com/

When you look around at the different electronic gizmos available to us today, one common feature that stands out is Bluetooth technology. It is having a significant impact on how we use and look upon consumer electronics today. One section of this mobile wireless technology marketplace that is continually expanding, especially in the area of development, is the Bluetooth wireless stereo headsets category.

With the rapidly evolving MP3 market place that is expected to carry on developing at incredible rates, and with the usage of and dependency on cellular telephones at an all time high, the overlap of these two common uses of Bluetooth technology is welcomed by consumers. This means that the demand for products, such as wireless stereo headsets, that can wirelessly play tunes from a cellphone, or from an iPod, or any other Bluetooth enabled device is substantially increasing. Utilizing mobile wireless technology networking seems to be the next logical step in flexibility and usability to merge these technologies of digital music and wireless connectivity.

Whereas work time and leisure time used to be seen as separate entities, the difference between the two has become slightly blurred over recent times which appears to be the thrust in bringing these changes about. Then there are the younger generation of today who want every piece of new technology to do even more than it already does. Nevertheless and for whatever reason, Bluetooth wireless headsets are coming onto the market thick and fast causing headset makers to reassess their future developments.

There are already several Bluetooth wireless stereo headsets readily available and there are more models coming, from more makers, all the time. Many of the wireless stereo headset models are more geared for being employed on telephone calls, while other models are mainly aimed at listening to music.

London, the capital city of England and the United Kingdom, has numerous tourist attractions, many of which are amongst the most popular in the country. For generations London has been a popular vacation destination and much of this interest is due to the immensity of the historical buildings and the unique culture. While many of the visitor attractions found in London have a historic interest, such as the Houses of Parliament, The Tower of London and Buckingham Palace, there are many that are only recent additions, such as the London Aquarium, and the youngest of these is the London Eye.

Many still refer to the London Eye as the Millennium Wheel, the reason being that it was built to commemorate then end of the old millenium and celebrate the new. It was officially opened by the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, in the evening of December 31 but, sadly, there were technical issues and it was not opened to the public until March 2000. Standing 135m above London it has become an unmistakable, and highly visible, landmark.

The Great Wheel of London was an enormous Ferris wheel, capable of carrying up to 1600 people, which appeared in Earl's Court in 1895. Unfortunately it was demolished in 1907 but today London has a replacement in the London Eye. Although it is not the largest Ferris wheel in the world it can legitimately claim to be the worlds largest cantilever observation tower!

Although the London Eye cannot carry as many people as the Great Wheel of London could it can manage to carry 25 people in each of its 32 capsules. It takes about 30 minutes for the wheel to make a complete revolution during which time you can choose to remain seated or you can stand up and walk about.

Around 3.5 million people take a flight on the London Eye each year making it the most popular paid visitor attraction in London and the UK. The main reason people take the trip is to enjoy the most amazing views of London. During a revolution it is possible to take in some of the many London landmarks such as Westminster Abbey, Hampton Court Palace and Buckingham Palace. Of course you also get a fantastic view of the Houses of Parliament and the tower containing Big Ben (Big Ben is actually the bell) as it almost appears to be below the Eye.

The London Eye has been the scene of many a marriage proposal and a number of weddings, which can be booked as a package. When booking a flight it is also possible to book other things such as educational trips for small groups of students of all ages.

If you are planning a vacation to London or just a weekend break it is well worth taking the opportunity to take a ride on this incredible visitor attraction. If your time in London is limited it is a real time saver as you are able to take in nearly all of the most important London landmarks during the 30 minute trip which is impossible to do any other way (excluding a helicopter or balloon ride).

If you are looking for accommodation in London you may appreciate the listings of hotels near the London Eye or the cheap London hotels listed on http://www.londonhotelhelper.com/

We are often told by the media, Ofcom and companies that international roaming charges will become cheaper. Are there real changes on the horizon or have we heard this too often?

In our current financial climate the ‘Financial Director or controller’ of any company, large or small, are seeking new ways of saving money on a business mobile and international roaming.

One of the problems with using business mobile phones abroad is the lack of information we are given as businesses and consumers. How much are we going to be charged? Is it possible to use our minutes abroad? Are there any alternatives and ways of saving money?

Let’s have a look on good deals on the market.

UK calls to 28 countries can be made by orange business customers right from their minutes bundle, and offerings just like this can also be found on o2 and T-mobile. Orange also offer ‘Business World Traveller’ which will give up to 50% off standard voice roaming rates and up to 25% off roaming data.

Vodafone have a similar service called ‘Passport’. You can also take advantage of reduced call charges when you call from another country. Pay 75p connection charge per call when abroad, then talk at your usual UK rate. Get your Vodafone sevice today call 5555 and recieve a free Vodafone handset.

o2 have what’s called ‘International Traveller Service’ which allows customers to call from Europe to the UK for £0.30p per minute. However, if you are calling from other parts of the world then the charges can vary from between £0.81p to £1.20 per minute.

T-mobile also have competitive roaming offers. T-mobile charge between £0.38p and £0.55p per minute to call the UK from Europe. Receiving calls with T-mobile have recently fallen meaning the cost is between £0.13p to £0.20p for Europe.

On certain schemes and networks it is possible to include international minutes that can be used in a certain country.

If you are regularly visiting a country and using your business mobile phone to call the UK, one option is to buy a local SIM card. You will in turn get a local phone number for the country you’re in. Within certain countries it would not be possible because you will have to be a documented resident.

Other options include purchasing international PAYG/Prepaid SIM cards in the UK which offer roaming savings, in some cases up to a 50% to 60% reduction in call charges.

The mobile phone networks are battling for our business, and competition is growing especially fierce in the international roaming market. I anticipate there will be increased competition in regard to the price of roaming throughout the globe. In the end, mobile service providers are competing to reduce prices even more.

Finally, whilst the networks are bombarded with bad press for over charging on roaming I believe they are reacting in a positive way that will benefit business mobile users in the UK.

Apple iPhone Review: Don’t Believe The Hype

Remember the Edsel, New Coke and Apple Ipod?

After much hype, the results are in on Apple’s new iPhone, and many people are not satisfied customers. In a way it can be related to the Edsel, a car named after a draft-dodging Ford family member, and the ’New Coke’ that everyone was excited about until they found out it tasted just like Pepsi. Even with a growing amount of dissatisfied customers the Apple iPhone has created an amazing amount of money for the company. Evidently, consumers are interested in just how bad a cell phone could be.

Can the Apple iPhone work with other devices correctly?

One of the most popular viral videos since the phone’s much-hyped 2007 release is that of a blender seller, who put an iPhone in a blender and turned on the machine. He did this to not only show off the power of his blender product, but also as a clear way to show his opinion of the new iPhone. The fact that the video went viral and became so popular, (more so than the Blendtec blender he was selling), means that many others seemed to agree with this particular review on Apples new iPhone.

 Keep Working It, Steve Jobs

If you want to read some of the reviews on Apple iPhones, you could go to the Cnet.com website for several ’geek reports’, just be prepared for the upper techno-jargon used because it can be tough to understand. Probably the best Apple iPhone reviews are done by the average person and you can find many to choose from on the internet. Apple iPhone reviews are easy to find online, simply type in: “Apple iPhone reviews”, in whatever search engine you use and you will find plenty to read.

Cara Volle wrote a review on Helium.com that you might want to check out. Her comments begin first by telling Steve Jobs in her own words how much she hates his iPhone. Many of these reviews are not written in an award winning fashion, but they do help to open one’s imagination on what possibilities can be made to future devices.

People have verbalized their disapproval of Apple iPhone’s everywhere, from cost to the way Apple strictly limited the network provider you have to use, which is AT&T. The picture quality of its camera is said to be pretty disappointing and streamlining video still has a lot of bugs to work out. People also began to notice very quickly, that the iPhone gets hot to-the-touch when using it for extended periods, which has caused many to worry about it’s safety. Another alarming fact is that well known computer security specialist have now found ways to hack into the Apple iPhone, which means others could do the same.

Consumers are the best ’testing ground’ for what was thought to be a public ready device, because if there is anything wrong someone will definitely find it. With that in mind, it would be best to wait about a year for companies to improve on their products and address all the critic’s concerns before you buy one. Then you will have a much better device that is worth the money you spend.
